Flexible Project Management

This course emphasizes adaptability, empathy, and collaboration over rigid “agile” methods or command-and-control leadership. Flexible project management focuses on staying open to change, delaying decisions until necessary, gathering information, and acting with the best available knowledge while keeping alternatives in mind. Project managers must continuously adapt to changing circumstances and even redefine the “rules” when needed to ensure success.

The approach is most useful when projects involve uncertainty, limited resources, or multiple possible directions. It helps teams focus on understanding stakeholder needs, making incremental progress, identifying core project value, breaking work into manageable tasks, and prioritizing and scheduling effectively. The framework is organized into nine lessons: Lesson 1 introduces some basic concepts; Lesson 2 emphasizes learning from past experiences; Lessons 3–8 cover these practical techniques; and Lesson 9 encourages teams to develop their own customized approach to flexible project management.
